About Allahabad University
Allahabad University is one of the most sought after universities of India. The University was founded on 23rd September, 1887. The University evolved to the present status from the Muir Central College which was established in 1876 by Sir William Muir who proposed that Allahabad should have a Central University. The University of Allahabad at one point was also known as the Oxford of the East. Till the year 1914, apart from the School of Law, there was no teaching staff in the University. After that, for graduate students, Modern History and Economics readerships and chairs were established. The University along with other universities of India was brought under the fold of Indian Universities Act in 1904.in 2005, the University was granted the status of a Central University by an Act of Parliament.
The University of Allahabad is located in Allahabad which is a prominent city in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. The city is also very famous as it is here that the Ganga and Yamuna meet. Allahabad is also the birthplace of the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and was a major hub of political activities during the freedom struggle.
The University of Allahabad has five faculties which are Commerce, Art, Medicine, Law and Science. There are three University Institutes which come under the University. These are National Centre of Experimental Mineralogy and Petrology, The Institute of Professional Studies and the Institute of Inter-Disciplinary Studies. Apart from this the Centre of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences is also a part of the University of Allahabad and this is an independent University centre. The Motilal Nehru Medical College and Swarup Rani Nehru Hospital are also a part of this University. Besides these three constituent colleges, Harish Chandra Research Institute of Mathematics and Mathematical Physics, The Govind Ballabh Pant Social Science Institute and the Kamla Nehru Post Graduate Medical Institute, and 11 local institutions come under the University which is governed by the University of Allahabad Act, 2005.
Under each of the faculties there are many courses offered in the University. The Faculty of Law is known to be the oldest department of legal studies in India. There were new departments introduced in 2006 under the UGC Plan.
The University of Allahabad has a beautiful and huge campus in Allahabad and there are a number of residential hostels also where the students can stay during their course in the University. There are hostels for both boys and girls and they are equipped with the best facilities for students. As per the amendment of the University Act of 1955 there are three categories of college under the University. These are University colleges, associated colleges and constituent colleges. The staff and teachers for all three categories are appointed by the management of the University. The efforts of the excellent faculty are evident from the Allahabad University Result.
Many politicians of the country and many well-known academicians and writers of India, apart from many famous personalities, all have been alumni of the University of Allahabad.
